Bulgaria is a very mountainous country with much of it at least 450 metres above sea level. Many peaks rise to 2500m and beyond. In many of the mountain ranges are towns and even cities situated on the side of these mountains. Many of the mountains contain ski resorts that boast skiing all day and night, however skiing is not the only sport which is on offer in Bulgaria ranging from mountain biking all the way through to Snowshoeing. Situated in the Rila mountains you can find the Rila monastery which played a major role in the orthodox Christianity in the middle ages and boasts some of the most famous biblical scenes ever painted. Also there are many ruins throughout many of the mountain ranges from fortresses that originated from the "Thracians" who inhabited most of Bulgaria during 2 B.C and left behind many fortresses and ruins all over Bulgaria. However the "Thracians" were not the only ones who left fortresses across the mountains it was also the rulers of the original Bulgarian kingdom.
