Location Map of Baglio Conca D'Oro
Description:
Big Paper-Mill is located in the Molara district that up to the end of the XVII century was still called 'Pietro Molara', because of the presence of the quarries from which the stone to build millstones was extracted. The historic 'Marchese di Villabianca' in the book 'Palermo doggigiorno' tells that the district of 'Pietro Molara' is located below Monreale, and adds that the 'village, is composed of a paper-mill and a parish, entitled S.Giuseppe, nd was founded in 1740 by the President of the Royal Estate Biagio De Spuches who wanted to call it Terra del Giglio (Land of the lily) from the lily on his familys coat-of-arms'. Moreover, in 1748, eight years after its establishment, it had 29 mortars or piles of stones for pressing rags. These were the raw materials for manufacturing paper, as well as 14 forms for making the various types of paper entrusted to skilled workers, that had been brought specially from Genoa, flanked by local manpower. Today, after careful restructuring which restored life to the entire building, the Paper Mill hosts a hotel where history and tradition fill the facades and internal areas, and where you can enjoy Sicilian recipes prepared to satisfy the demands of an international clientele.
