Description:
Lampedusa, technically Italian, but geographically close to Africa, offers to its visitors an evocative impression that boasts unique to the Mediterranean. The largest of the islands in the archipelago of Pelagie (that is comprised of Linosa and Lampione) and the southern most island in Europe. Its 40 Km of coast, ranging from high cliffs to peaks above the sea on the north side, to beautiful beaches of fine white sands on the south enclosed in small bays with primitive charm. The island, situated in the center of the Mediterranean, is formed on a calcareous rock and has a surface of 21 Kmq. The jagged coast of Lampedusa, is interrupted by bays, beaches and cliffs. The best way to explore the coast is by boat. Locally, it's possible to rent a boat that can circumnavigate the coast, the best way to learn about the island. Along the coast, one can admire numerous grotte (caves) some of which you can enter by boat. The depths are colorful and populated, a place ideal for diving and admiring the marvels of the island. One of the more frequented turists spots is the Isola dei Conigli (rabbit island), accessible by foot or by sea, one of the few places sea turtles come to lay their eggs. In the last few years it has come under the protection of WWF.
