Location Map of Hotel Stefanie
Description:
Dating back to the early 1400s, the most important inns for businessmen and coachmen were situated here, directly in front of the walls surrounding what was then Vienna proper. To this day, the neighbourhood is a good starting point for visitors to Vienna. Most major sites can be quickly and easily reached on foot. In the seventeenth century, Taborstrasse experience a veritable 'hotel boom' - a document dated 04 May 1630 granted the owners of the buildings at the beginning of the street the privilege to 'house strangers and serve food in return for money'. The first historical mention of Hotel Stefanie dates back to the year 1703. A certain Josepha Winkler acquired the 'Weiße Rose' (White Rose) at Taborstrasse 12 - the present-day Hotel Stefanie - in 1728. Seventy years later, in 1798, the 'Weiße Rose' was mentioned in Vienna's first hotel guide. Incidentally, of all the hotels listed in that guide, only three have survived to the present day. Business grew rapidly, and on 05 May 1829, plans for an extension encompassing 75 additional guest rooms and stabling for 90 more horses was approved. In a visitors brochure published on the occasion of the 1848 Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire (Reichstag), the 'Wei?e Rose' Hotel was referred to as a 'Reichstagshotel' due to the many delegates who lodged there. In 1870, the great-grandfather of Dr. Martin Schick acquired the 'Weiße Rose', which was listed in the 1873 hotel guide as having 110 rooms, making it one of the largest hotels in Vienna. Today, Hotel Stefanie is loved by thousands of guests from all over the world, as a 4-star hotel with state-of-the-art facilities and that personal Viennese atmosphere rooted in centuries of tradition.
